Is Gareth Bale one of the best players in the world right now?
“I shall still say that Gareth Bale is a top player and if he improves on his consistency then there is no reason why he cannot be considered amongst one of the world’s best player. Also his next move to a different club will probably determine how history will judge Gareth Bale, a great player or another failed potential.” Writes Pranjal Bhawal
A great man once said ‘There are lies, there are damn lies and then there are statistics’. Gareth Bale is one of those examples where the statistics alone doesn’t at all tell the entire story. His early career at Southampton was all about his blistering pace and his tremendous free kicks, two attributes which have kept him in good stead even now. While Bale gets all the credit for his match winning performances week in and week out, and deservedly so, one should not forget the contribution of Juande Ramos in Bale’s stuttering career at the time as it was his tactical stroke of playing him as a winger instead of a left back which completely turned Bale’s fortune.
Coming into this season Gareth Bale’s performances have attracted the attention of clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United. Also it’s just not this season’s performance but also his consistent performance for the last couple of seasons. Remember the Inter Milan Vs Tottenham Hotspur match in the Champions League a couple of years back when a ten man Spurs team trailing 4-0 almost made a comeback courtesy a brilliant hat trick by Gareth Bale. In fact such was his performance that Maicon, who was Inter Milan’s right back at the time, never ever properly recovered from it. However this season Gareth Bale has taken his game to the next level where he is rescuing his team Spurs from a hole week in and week out. Even this week it took a injury time winner from this Welsh winger to win the match against the lowly Hammers.
While Bale’s strike was undoubtedly great and he should rightly get all the applause for his brace it perhaps also highlighted the fact that how much Spurs are dependant on him to deliver the goods on a regular basis in their quest for Champions League football. And here in comes my main concern in calling Gareth Bale one of the best players in the world right now as maybe Spurs’s failings in performing as a team is making Bale look much better than he is in reality. Don’t get me wrong as Bale is indeed a terrific player but is he really almost in the league of Ronaldo or Messi? The honest answer is of course no.
Gareth Bale at the moment has scored nine out of ten goals for Spurs and his drifting infield at opportune moments of the match is helping him keep up such an inhuman ratio. However while his goal scoring record in unquestionably great the question arises whether he can do it against the better teams as till now he is still more of a ‘fat track bully’ with his performances against the better teams still not up to scratch.
However having said everything, I shall still say that Gareth Bale is a top player and if he improves on his consistency then there is no reason why he cannot be considered amongst one of the world’s best player. Also his next move to a different club will probably determine how history will judge Gareth Bale, a great player or another failed potential.
